Asphalt Crack Sealing Services

Nothing lasts forever, not even asphalt surfaces. Though they’re durable, they will degrade over time just like anything else. When properly maintained, asphalt driveways and parking lots can last 15–20 years. So how can you keep your asphalt in great shape? One way is to give it prompt attention if you notice any of the following conditions:

  • cracks
  • warping
  • drainage problems
  • faded color
  • sinkage
  • stains
  • broken edges

Don’t Worry—We Can Help!

Some issues require major repairs, repaving, or replacing an asphalt surface altogether. However, Black Canvas Sealcoat, in Couer d’Alene, ID, can generally assist if you notice cracks. Here are the most common types that can usually be remedied with professional crack sealing:

  • Transverse cracks generally form at perpendicular angles to the direction the surface was laid and are commonly seen in aging asphalt. They are typically caused by temperature fluctuations.

  • Longitudinal cracks generally form in a parallel fashion to the direction the surface was laid and are usually caused by an installation error, brittleness, or temperature fluctuations.
  • Edge cracks show up between an asphalt surface and curbs or landscaping. They are usually caused by freeze/thaw cycles or if edges see repeated heavy traffic. Crack sealing services can generally remedy edge cracks, but sometimes they require repair or replacement.
  • Seam cracks are just as they sound and tend to worsen along pavement joints. They’re thought to be caused by poor installation but should be sealed promptly as any water or ice left to penetrate will make them much worse.
  • Block cracks make their appearance in rectangular patterns and are usually due to age and worn-down surfaces.
  • Reflective cracks occur when cracking is present in the areas under the top layer of asphalt surfaces, and it spreads to the upper layers.
  • Alligator cracks gets their name because they form a network of cracks that resemble an alligator’s skin. They’re commonly caused by heavy use or in jobs where the asphalt may not have been installed properly.
